How to send your wedding invitation on WhatsApp without it looking like spam
You paste the link, pick 40 contacts, hit send. Half of them never see it, and Periappa asks why he wasn't invited. Here's what goes wrong, and what to do instead.
Broadcast lists only reach people who saved your number
A WhatsApp broadcast list sends each person a private message, but it's delivered only if they have your number saved, and WhatsApp doesn't tell you who missed out. A list holds at most 256 people. Use broadcasts for close family, who certainly have your number, and send to everyone else one by one.
Don't forward the family's message
WhatsApp marks forwarded messages with "Forwarded", and after a message passes through five or more chats, "Forwarded many times". Your wedding shouldn't arrive looking like a chain message. Send it fresh from your own phone.
Start with a name
A message that's only a link looks like a forward. One line first changes that:
Dear Meenakshi aunty, Kavya and Arun are getting married on 13 December, and we'd love you there. Your invitation: [link]
Paste the link and wait a second for the preview card, with your names and photo, to appear before you tap send.
Split it up
Sending 300 messages in an evening is the pattern WhatsApp watches for, especially to people who haven't saved your number. Let the bride's family send to their side and the groom's family to theirs, over a few days.
Call the elders first
For grandparents and senior relatives, a phone call or a visit comes first, and the link follows. Some will want the printed card anyway: print the invitation's QR code on it.
Mind the clock
Nothing after 10 pm. For relatives in Dubai or New Jersey, check their time before you send.
One reminder, not five
A week before your reply-by date, message only the people who haven't replied. The day before each function, send the map.
